Demystifying The Middle East Music Market
Development, labels, live, royalties & streaming in the Middle East
Chaired by Emma Bartholomew (UK), Emma Bartholomew PR, with Habib Achour (Tunisia/France), Sacem; Lara Khoury (UK/Lebanon), Consultant
This session at the annual WOMEX Conference focusses on artist development in a region that often seems inaccessible to the broader global music industry, mainly due to its very recent inception as part of the global commercial music business. The panel aims to correct common misconceptions, clarify the current landscape, advise on best practices, in terms of local collaborations and partnerships, and outline the opportunities and challenges for artists both within and outside the region. Regional experts will discuss both the development of regional artists locally and globally, looking to develop their careers within and beyond the region, and the development of opportunities for global artists wanting to enter the region.

Midem Panel: Is Middle East The New Streaming Eldorado?
Emma moderates this panel exploring the opportunities available for streaming in the Middle East region.
Digital music streaming in the region is in its infancy and has experienced almost none of the problems US and Europe have faced. However, the MENA region is still plagued with problems such as poor internet connection and introducing consumers to paid subscription models for music. Recently, international platforms like Spotify and Deezer entered the MENA streaming market. History has taught us that competition is always good. This discussion will focus on if it is good for both consumers and artists since it helps create more opportunities and cultivate a culture for local talent to flourish.
Panelists: Eddy Maroun, Co-founder & CEO, Anghami, Hisham Aramouny, Content, Artist Marketing & Industry Relations Director – MENA, Deezer (UAE), Moe Hamzeh, Managing Director, Warner Music Middle East (Lebanon) & Baris Zavaroglu, Director of Digital Media Services, Turkcell (Turkey).

Sandstorm at Theatre Royal Haymarket
The intriguing, sumptuous sounds of Arabic-influenced world music, brought to life by the world-class élan of the London Metropolitan Orchestra
Following a critically acclaimed preview of her work, performed by the Peace and Prosperity Trust at London’s Cadogan Hall last year, Dana Al Fardan presents her latest work, Sandstorm, at the Theatre Royal Haymarket this September. This rare programme of the Qatari composer’s interpretation of contemporary classical music will be performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra (LMO), conducted by Musical Director, Andy Brown, enriched by a brief narrative setting the scene of the score.
Sandstorm is the latest album by the Arabic songwriter, composer and symphonic artist, and blends rich strings, choral vocals and soloists with traditional Middle Eastern rhythms. Dana represents the Qatari woman of 2017, proud to present her country’s culture to the world, building its music industry from within the nation, having founded the country’s only record label, DNA Records. She hopes to promote the human face of her people, a nationality whose culture is little known.
The LMO is an ensemble of world-class musicians that has been engaged by all the major Hollywood studios and worldwide record labels for over 20 years. On 17th September, the curtain will rise on the orchestra performing a full programme of a unique interpretation of World music for the first time to an international audience for one night only.

Future Music Forum Feat. London Sync Sessions
Future Music Forum Feat. London Sync Sessions, Barcelona, September 2017
The Future Music Forum (FMF), Europe’s favourite boutique industry conference, today announced the launch of its 8th edition, which will this year incorporate the 3rd edition of the London Sync Sessions (LSS). FMF 2017, featuring LSS, will take place from 13th-15th September at the Estrella Damm Brewery in Barcelona.
The FMF is a global 3-day music conference presenting industry speakers from around the world, networking sessions, keynote presentations, panel discussions, workshops and live showcases from Europe’s freshest up and coming bands. 2017 will be the first edition of the event featuring the London Sync Sessions, which has built on its huge inaugural success in 2015 at Metropolis Studios and now looking forward to an even bigger lineup in its 3rd year.
FMF Features 3rd Edition of London Sync Sessions in 2017
FMF Founder, Niall Doorley says of the decision to host the Sync Sessions at this year’s event, “LSS has quickly become the definitive and must-attend event for all in the world of sync and perfectly complements our offering at FMF. They bring a focused cohort of the best of the sync and publishing world to our global cross-sector of industry attendees. What delegates experience when they attend the conference is an intimate gathering of like-minded industry professionals, frank discussions about the business’ landscape and the opportunity to network with an international community of forward-thinkers and decision-makers.” LSS Co-Founder and Head of Metropolis Creative, Rupert Hollier, adds, “FMF has established itself as one of the most authentic and highest quality industry conferences on the European agenda, so it seemed a natural event partner for us. LSS provides attendees with an opportunity to engage with in-depth discussions about the role of synchronisation in the music industry, with contributions from CEOs, publishers, record labels, film and TV producers, supervisors and composers, and has fast become something of a Mecca for those in our sector of the industry, so brings a new element of detailed focus to the overall FMF content.”
LSS 2017 Partners with Coversion, The Sync-Focused Covers Catalogue
LSS organisers, Metropolis Music Publishing (MMP), are delighted to announce their partnership this year with Coversion, a sync-focused covers catalogue, which will launch at the Barcelona event and are the headline sponsors for the LSS. LSS Organiser, David Fish, Publishing and Sync Manager at Metropolis, says, “We are excited to have Coversion on board this year. The catalogue’s Co-founder Janesta Boudreau comes from a distinguished background in sync and her team of music supervisors, producers and artists are bringing something fresh and relevant to the sync market, making Coversion the perfect fit for LSS.” Coversion Co-Founder Boudreau adds, “We’re really happy to be working with the LSS team. The event really is the go-to on the sync and publishing calendar, so we are looking forward to hosting a panel and introducing delegates to the Coversion catalogue at our dedicated launch during the event.”
Global Industry Speakers
Confirmed keynote speakers for this year’s FMF include Seymour Stein (Chairman/VP, Sire Records/Warner Bros. Records), Dante Ross (Legendary Hip Hop producer), Mandar Thakur (COO, Times Music), Tracy Maddux (CEO, CD Baby), Seth Jackson (Founder/CEO, Landmrk, Kajal Gayadien (Global Head of Licensing, Vevo) and Steven Bartlett (CEO of Social Chain), with further speakers due to be announced in the lead-up to the event.

This 8th edition of the FMF follows seven successful years of growth, which have seen an array of music tech companies, entrepreneurs, musicians & music industry related executives descend on Barcelona for three days of lively discussion focused on where the music industry is heading and how its key players are driving change, innovation and improvements in best practice across the board. Participants have included Shazam, Beggars Group, Spotify, 8Tracks, EMI, Sony, Soundcloud and many more.
